Maybe your period is late, or maybe this month just feels different. Either way, you’re standing there wondering if it’s too early to test or if you should have tested already. Timing does change how reliable your result is.

What a Pregnancy Test Is Actually Measuring

A pregnancy test looks for human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the hormone your body starts producing once a fertilized egg attaches itself to the lining of the uterus. Early on, hCG levels almost double every three days, which is exactly why timing matters so much.

Test too soon, and there may not be enough hCG built up yet to detect, even if you are pregnant.

Why Waiting a Few Days Can Change Your Result

Some tests can detect hCG before a missed period, but for the most accurate result, wait until at least a day or two after your period was due. Testing first thing in the morning helps too, since your urine is more concentrated after a full night without fluids, which makes hCG easier to detect.

If Your Cycle Doesn’t Follow a Clear Pattern

Irregular cycles make “missed period” a fuzzy marker.

If a test comes back negative but your period still hasn’t started, it’s worth testing again in a few days. Because hCG builds quickly in early pregnancy, a negative test one week can turn positive within days.

If a second test is still negative and your period hasn’t arrived, that’s a good reason to check in with a healthcare provider.
